Few artists embody the convergence of creativity, compassion, and public service as fully as Mac Allison Aguirre Calleja. A Bicolano visual artist, registered nurse, and officer of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Camarines Sur, Calleja has built a distinguished career where art becomes both a means of expression and an instrument of transformation.

A self-taught artist, Calleja works across diverse media, including acrylic, coffee, and soil, developing a distinctive visual language marked by impressionistic forms, vibrant colors, and emotionally resonant themes. His artworks draw inspiration from nature, personal reflection, and the everyday encounters that reveal the enduring resilience of the human spirit.
Beyond the canvas, Calleja is widely recognized for bringing art into spaces where hope is often hardest to find. Through his pioneering mentorship programs in detention facilities, schools, and communities, he has helped nurture emerging artists and opened creative pathways for Persons Deprived of Liberty, encouraging self-expression, dignity, and personal renewal through artistic practice. His advocacy has earned attention from local, national, and international media, highlighting the transformative power of art in rehabilitation and community building.

A graduate of the University of Nueva Caceres in Naga City and a registered nurse by profession, Calleja continues to balance his commitment to public service with an active artistic career. His achievements have been featured by CNN Philippines’ The Good Juan, ABS-CBN, GMA Network, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and DZMM Teleradyo, among other media platforms, recognizing his contributions as both artist and changemaker.
Calleja’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo, duo, group, and international exhibitions across the Philippines, Spain, Mexico, and the United States. He currently serves as President of the Kintab Artist Group Incorporated and is also known for designing the BJMP Health Uniform at the national level and the BJMP Libmanan logo.
At the heart of his practice lies a simple but enduring belief: “You are an artist, no matter how often you make art or how much you make from it.” That philosophy continues to guide his creative journey, inspiring others to discover art not merely as a craft, but as a pathway to purpose, healing, and human connection.

Artistic Philosophy
Art Gallery owner and critic Marlene Ayen Galit writing for Artista De Colores International Online Magazine, points out, “For Calleja, being an artist is not measured by fame, frequency, or financial success. It is a way of seeing, feeling, creating, and connecting with others. His story reminds us that creativity can flourish anywhere—even behind bars, in classrooms, workplaces, and communities. Through his paintings, mentorship, professional service, and leadership, he continues to demonstrate that art can become a language of hope and a pathway toward human connection.”
