The FAIR WEATHER ART CATALOGUE is the initiative of the Bikolnon visual arts community for the benefit of visual artists who were severely affected by Typhoon Kristine. We feature herein their appeal for support and assistance. This is Volume 1 of their 2-part catalogue curated by Dennis B. Gonzaga.
The Bikol Region was among the areas in the country hit hard by Typhoon Kristine. In a matter of a few hours, the volume of rain that the typhoon brought washed out property and claimed lives. For a significant sector of the population, the cost of recovery is projected to take months, if not years.
The creative community was particularly hit hard by the calamity. Art studios, personal art galleries, and even entire dwellings that frequently double as stockrooms for paintings, handicrafts, and art materials were claimed by the rain and the flood. For most of the local artists creative resources are directly and intricately woven with livelihood, the aftermath of Typhoon Kristine is a vulnerable present and a bleak future.
In the wake of disasters of this magnitude, artists and creatives are often among the last to recover as most of the resources related to disaster rehabilitation are diverted to the so-called “essential” needs. And yet, in fair weather, it is often the artists who are called upon to embellish the public space and to articulate the social face. How we care for our creative communities reflect how we value our culture and our identity.
The members of the visual arts community in Naga City, Camarines Sur, and other areas in the Bikol Region impacted by the recent floods, with the assistance of The 416 Art Space, have banded together in an appeal for support from art patrons. What they appeal for is the opportunity to rebuild the creative assets that have been washed out in rain and mud. This appeal for aid is consolidated into the Fair Weather Art Catalogue.
The Fair Weather Art Catalogue is a showcase of the creative spirit of the artists from Naga City, Camarines Sur, and other impacted areas of the Bikol Region, figuratively and literally salvaged from the flood. Featured in the catalogue are these rescued art pieces–beautiful and expressive even in the wake of a natural disaster.
For you, they can be worthy additions to your art collection. For the artists, they may be lifelines and a second chance to rebuild.
